A woman was convicted for a high-speed crash that killed her boyfriend in Florida.
After a two-day trial, a Flagler County jury found defendant Leigha Mumby guilty as charged of Vehicular Homicide and Reckless Driving with Serious Bodily Injury.
On February 9, 2025, Mumby was arguing with her boyfriend, Daniel Waterman, while driving recklessly on Interstate 95 at over 100 MPH.
The defendant was driving 94 MPH when she suddenly turned the steering wheel to the left, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and crash into several trees.
Waterman suffered a broken neck and was paralyzed from the neck down. He later died of pneumonia on October 8, 2025.
“This demonstrates our commitment to taking on complicated cases involving technical subject matter,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said. “Accountability breeds justice – and this case exemplifies our mission to make justice a reality for our victims, our families and our communities.”
The Florida Highway Patrol investigated the case. Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark successfully tried the case for the State of Florida. The Honorable Dawn Nichols heard the case. Mumby faces 20 years in prison for the convictions.
