The holidays offer the perfect opportunity to get out and experience all the cool attractions Los Angeles has to offer. With the sun setting before 5 p.m., illuminated attractions are the perfect evening activity for after work or school to bring the whole family together.
Arriving just in time to kick off the holiday season is “NightTales: An Illuminated Museum Experience,” a new indoor-outdoor nighttime event arriving at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County on select dates from Nov 12 through Jan 10.
“Wander through wonder with glowing installations, cinematic projections, and enchanting encounters throughout the Museum’s halls and gardens,” the team behind the event promises. “More than a traditional light show, this immersive experience is inspired by the Museum’s diverse collections and the natural world, sparking curiosity and delight at every turn.”
The new installation is being brought to life by Los Angeles-based artist Maggie West. Known for her work in photography, video and large-scale installation art, West creates her art by documenting natural subjects over extended periods of time. Through this practice, she reveals movements, transformations and patterns that are often invisible to the human eye. West combines these photographic techniques with light and technology to create heightened environments that blur the boundaries between documentation and fantasy.
Instead of creating a pop-up attraction, NightTales is using the actual museum exhibits as the canvas for the show. The museum’s Dinosaur Hall alone holds more than 300 fossils and 20 mounted dinosaur skeletons, while the Gem and Mineral Hall contains 150,000 objects, including gold, diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Outside the museum’s walls, the Nature Gardens create a living pocket of Southern California wildlife and native plants in the middle of Exposition Park. Expect glowing creatures, vivid botanical images, cinematic light displays, and a one-of-a-kind darkened-gallery atmosphere that makes the ordinary museum trip worth the holiday evening traffic.
While parts of the Exposition Park institution will remain closed during the special evenings, other areas, including the garden, will be open to ticket holders for timed-entry visits from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on select nights starting Nov 12.
