Houston residents signed up for emergency alerts at record-breaking rates during the 2026 hurricane season, marking a major milestone for the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management (Houston OEM).
Although the Houston area was spared a major hurricane impact this season, the surge in registrations sends a clear message: preparedness doesn’t wait for a storm.
Starting June 1 — the official start of hurricane season — AlertHouston registrations climbed at nearly four times the typical monthly average. September was the standout month, with signups reaching 420% above the normal monthly average.
Houston OEM also reported a notable uptick in registrations for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR), a program that helps emergency planners identify residents who may need additional support during a disaster, including some older adults and people with disabilities.
Brian Mason, director of the Houston Office of Emergency Management, says the numbers reflect years of sustained community outreach.
“Preparedness is about taking action before an emergency happens, and we’re encouraged to see more Houstonians taking that step by signing up for AlertHouston,” Mason said.
“This milestone reflects the importance of our continued investment in community outreach and preparedness education. Every presentation, community event and conversation is an opportunity to help someone take action that could make a difference when it matters most. We’re building a stronger culture of preparedness across Houston, and we encourage everyone to stay informed, make a plan and take steps today to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
How to sign up
Disasters can strike at any time of year. Houston OEM encourages all residents to stay informed, make a plan and take action now — not just during hurricane season. The agency’s Be #READY365 message reinforces that preparedness is a year-round commitment.
